Visiting the New Dr Zahi Hawass at Saqqara
Zahi Hawass has a new website. The old website, ‘The Plateau’ which was set up and maintained by Andrew Bayuk has been decommissioned as Andrew pursues his dream and now redirects to the new address.
I’ve been twittering about the new website but I thought I’d write a blog post to put together all of the information that I could find there on the recent Saqqara discoveries.
A Visit to Saqqara:
I went to Saqqara this morning with John Rogers, Secretary to the Board of Goldman Sachs, and Dina Habib Powell, who is a managing director with the firm and also the daughter of a dear friend of mine.
Press Release – New Discovery in Saqqara:
Culture minister Farouk Hosni announced today that an Egyptian archaeological mission headed by Dr. Zahi Hawass, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), has discovered two rock-cut tombs at the El-Deir bridge area in the Saqqara necropolis, 400 meters south of the step-pyramid.

About a year ago, my team conducted a survey and began excavations in an area known as the Gisr El-Mudir at Saqqara. “Gisr El-Mudir” means “bridge of the director” – the name refers to the fact that, many years ago, an expedition director used to pitch his tent nearby.
Queen’s Pyramid Discovered at Saqqara
Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, announced today that he and his team have discovered the pyramid of a 6th Dynasty queen at Saqqara. Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni was present for the announcement, which took place today at the site of the discovery.
