Visiting the Egyptian Pyramids

After seeing Andie Byrne’s request for information on the which pyramids were currently open to the public I realised that if I am to create a real information service on the ancient Egyptian pyramids I need to include this sort of information.

So I have begun adding opening times on those pyramids that are currently open to the public to visit. I’ll continue to hunt down the open times of the rest of the pyramids and add them to the ‘Pyramid Fields’ section on the right hand side of the page.

The following information showing those pyramids that are currently open to the public was taken from Yahoo and I am not able to confirm that it is 100% accurate:

An Ancient Egyptian Pyramids Photo page has been added and it currently has a fancy Flickr slide show just for your enjoyment.

If anyone has any suggestions or requests or more information to add don’t hesitate to post a comment or email me directly.

    Thanks for the info

  2. When you say only 150 tickets are sold each day is that to enter the Pyramid? We are only in Cairo one day from 9am at the airport.
We are not concerned with entering the Pyramid we only want to view it from close range as we do the Sphinx. Is this Possible

  3. Hi Mark,
No the limit of 150 people is just to enter the Great Pyramid (Khufu’s).

You can enter the Plateau for 60 Egyptian Pounds and I don’t think there is a limit on the amount of people allowed on the plateau.

    Vincent.

  4. Hi Vincent,

    How are you?

My girlfriend and I wish to visit the Pyramids for New Year around the 28th December 2009. Are they still open over Christmas and New Year and does anything special happen?

    Cheers,

    Marcus

  5. Hi Marcus,

The pyramids don’t close for Christmas so you’ll be fine.

  6. I understand the pyramids are open on a rotation basis, so that every other year, the great pyramid is closed. Is it open this year 2009? I don’t want to visit Egypt and not be able to go in.

    Thanks
    Abi

  7. Hi Abi,

The Great Pyramid, that is, the pyramid of Khufu, is currently open and should remain open all year. It’s not quite correct to say that is closes every other year as the rotation includes all three pyramids, so that technically, each pyramid is closed every third year. I say “technically” because Menkaure was closed last year and has been closed all of this year so far.

I keep the information on each pyramid as up to date as I can. You can access this information from any page by clicking on any particular pyramid link located at the top of the first column on the right.

The Khufu pyramid page is also accessible from the Giza page. Be aware though that not all chambers of Khufu’s pyramid are open to the public at the moment. The last report I had from April this year was that the sub-terranean and queen’s chambers were closed.

  8. Hi Abi,
My boyfriend and I will be entering Cairo from Israel on 12-29-10 and wanted to know if the pyramids close on 12-31 or 1-1 or if anything closes? Also, where in Cairo do you recommend we go to celebrate New Year’s Eve? Thanks

  9. No, nothing closes around the new year in Egypt, it’s not really celebrated in a very big way. I’d be inclined to suggest you go to an Egyptian Restaurant (like Fefela) for dinner and then cruise out on the Nile on a felucca for half an hour or so for the midnight moment. The felucca guys hang out along the Nile, you can’t miss them.

  10. I’ve just arrived in hagarda on Monday …do u know what pyramids are open now as the riots have stoped ?

  11. Have a look at the pyramid pages in the sidebar on the right. As far as I know things are back to normal at Giza so Khafre and Khufu would be the ones there that are open. Menkaure is still closed. I am not sure if Saqqara and Dahshur are open but I doubt it considering Dahshur was looted twice on the weekend.
