Underneath the Step Pyramid with Dr Hawass

Zahi Hawass appears in another video on YouTube. This time he is underneath the step pyramid of Djoser discussing the restoration of the monument. Zahi’s pride of his all-Egyptian team and their part in preserving this ancient wonder is clear.

For the last year, an all-Egyptian team has been working to conserve and restore this precious part of the legacy of ancient Egypt. The team’s latest achievement has been to clear a deep layer of debris covering the king’s sarcophagus. The surface of the sarcophagus is now visible for the first time in recent memory. In addition, the team has located a passage leading underneath the sarcophagus, allowing scholars to examine it from all sides.

  1. Not sure I get this; was he sat on the sarcophagus? did we get a good view of it?

  2. He was sitting on the vault containing the sarcophagus. Rubble had previously covered the top of the vault. It was partially cleared enough to see the large granite beams and the unusual 3.5 ton granite plug but Hawass’s team appear to have not just pushed the rubble aside but removed it from the area. There was no view of the sarcophagus….other than from within the tunnel that goes underneath the sarcophagus. I was concerned that Hawass had told them to go ahead and break the large granite beams so that they could get access to the sarcophagus.
