Giza Necropolis Threatened by Road

The greater Cairo ring road on the edge of the Giza plataue was planned 15 years ago and cost millions of dollars. The road travels over an enormous area of untouched desert, an area that is protected by world heritage status. Work on the road was stopped in 1995 after complaints by archaeologists. The Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) stopped the project from going ahead but thousands of cars and heavy trucks continue to use the road disturbing the unexcavated desert.

Head of the SCA at the time Professor Abdel Halim Nur El-Din expresses his concerns:

“Everything was exploited when I worked there in office and I found myself unable to deal with the matter with out the help of the ministry…I am really worried. It is a necropolis, a cemetary, we have to respect that.”
