Friday Photo: Mamun’s Tunnel
While on the topic of tunnels I thought it an appropriate opportunity to slip in this photo.
It was taken from inside the tunnel that was created by Caliph Mamun when he burrowed into the Great pyramid in search of treasure in 820 A.D. The end of the tunnel can be seen in the background where it joins the ascending passage.
Mamun’s tunnel is still used today as a means of entering the pyramid, the original entrance is sealed with a locked steel grate.
