Friday Photo: Khufu’s Boat Pit
Beside the pyramid of Khufu there are five boat pits. Actually seven pits have been found but two of these belong to the queens’ pyramids being located between satellite pyramids GI-b & GI-c. The two most well known boat pits are on the south side of the pyramid while two more are located in a similar arrangement on the east side of the pyramid. The last pit is located on the north side of the pyramid’s causeway.

Great shots, Vincent, thanks! The boat museum beside Khufu’s pyramid is, well.. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But the boat within, the ability to be so close to a Sun Barque and to really see it from every angle, that part of the architecture I can dig.
The story of how they found it is pretty entertaining as well.. I guess you have to build roads somewhere!

Yes, the museum is a bit of an eye sore. It is amazing to think how recently they were discovered – the first one in 1954 and then the second one in 1957.
I am sure we’ll see more discoveries in the future too…which I will be reporting here of course.
