Bennu’s Bonus Pack, CC & iTunes

Learning ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs can be difficult. From having to remember the individual hieroglyphs, the vocabulary and grammatical structure of the sentences, to the transliteration techniques and Manual deCodage codes. It’s like having to learn several languages at the same time. Many people find it all too overwhelming and give up not long after starting.

Each day Bennu tweets one word in ancient Egyptian with the Egyptological codes and a link to a picture of the hieroglyphic representation of the word. After a week, these vocab tweets are gathered together and presented as a video flash card-like presentation with related (however tenuous) sound effects. As well as including subtle references to Twitter these accompanying sound effects provide a sensory learning aspect to the experience aimed at enhancing and strengthening the learning.

Using Twitter in combination with YouTube, Vimeo, Slideshare and other social networking services, Bennu is able to accompany the vocab with pictures, videos and powerpoint presentations.

These tools are designed to help memorise the vocabulary as a supplement only and not intended to replace the need for structured lessons. Ideally, they are to be used with Janice Kamrin’s book ‘Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs – A Practical Guide’. Participating with an online group such as GlyphStudy or AEL is a great help enabling you to bounce ideas off others and learn with a group.
