Ancient Egypt News for Wednesday 23-12-09
Zahi Hawass has stated that documents that were presented to him by the Berlin Museum head confirm that the bust of Nefertiti was taken out of Egypt unethically.
Berlin maintains that no official claim by Egypt has ever been made and the Prussian Heritage Foundation has denied the suggestion that Borchard deliberately misled the Egyptian inspector of antiquities.
Meanwhile, recent tests indicate that the bust is too fragile to travel to Egypt. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s top culture aide, Bernd Neumann, said that a loan was now:
‘…absolutely out of the question on conservation grounds alone.’
Shemsu Sesen has a summary on his website Em Hotep.
Yet another great figure in Egyptology has passed away. Here is the message from the Egypt Exploration Society’s website:
We are very sorry to report that Mr T G H (Harry) James, an EES Vice-President and former Chairman of the Society, died in the Royal Free Hospital in London on Wednesday 16 December 2009. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues.
Susan Llewellyn ends the year with some words of truth, completing the offering formula she as been teaching piece by piece over the past few months.
