Ancient Egypt News for Monday 07-12-09

A few more Mummy stories in the news today, plus more on the return of Egypt’s Rosetta stone with Egypt to host a conference next March for countries wanting their own items returned. The new laws which will mean smugglers will now face up to 25 years behind bars.

‘We expect around 12 countries to participate, possibly several more,” Dr Hawass said.

”There is a moral imperative for museums around the world to return certain artefacts to the countries they came from, and we are going to identify how we can help each other to increase the pressure on the keepers of those artefacts.”
”I am calling on all nations who want their important artefacts returned to attend the conference,”
said Dr Hawass.

Three Egyptology courses are currently on offer at the Brown University. These include:

  • An Introduction to Ancient Egypt
  • Introduction to Egyptian Hieroglyphics
  • Ancient Egyptian Religion and Magic

Today saw the last VOCAB tweet for the year, though the chart for the past week will be posted tomorrow.

Unfortunately Tutankhamun will not be travelling to Australia as the $10 million price tag is too much for us to afford.

There are some videos for you today, such as this one is a short documentary on Egypt’s antiquities from 1938:
