Ancient Egypt News for Monday 11-01-10
A school boy chips off a chunk of the Great Pyramid, gets plagued by many years of guilt. He finally returns the chunk to it’s original position in the pyramid and then knits a giant replica of the chunk as a self-imposed means of paying penance for his crime. It is hoped the work of art will raise awareness of the illegal removal of antiquities from Egypt. The exhibition entitled ‘Pyramid Piece 2009′ is being displayed alongside a film about the piece called ‘Return of the Pyramid Piece 2008′, in which he climbs the pyramid and returns the stone to its original spot.
There is a new game out from National Geographic called the Mystery of Cleopatra that is available for download and Mary Harrsch gives a review and a few other Egypt related games. A few other fun things for children is the British Museum’s ‘The Challenge – Making Sense’ for some hieroglyphic fun as well as the Children’s Museum of Manchester’s page on hieroglyphs.
Bring out your dead! Channel 4 is looking for an unusual volunteer – one who is willing to give their body up to be mummified. They are asking specifically for a terminally ill person. I hope they plan on waiting till they are dead first (a scene from ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ springs to mind).
